Looking for an overall skin improvements ?
However afraid of allergic reaction to dermal filler ?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy might be an option for you!
PRP therapy also known as the Vampire Facelift thanks to one celebrity, Kim Kardashian, who tried and recommended the procedure, and gave it its nickname.
I know it sounds scary, but in fact it is not ! It has nothing to do with the movie Twilight Saga nor Vampire Diaries.
It is given the name 'vampire' just because of the re-injection of our own plasma which is separated from own blood into the treatment area.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy has gained its popularity nowadays due to the fact of very minimal or even no side effects at all. This therapy uses patient's own plasma as a filler instead of hyaluronic acid filler which is well known as a natural substance in the body. Hence, it will not trigger any allergic reaction and so it is safe as the filler is from the patient's own blood.
What is PRP Therapy?
Platelet-rich plasma therapy utilises the patient's own platelets to help the body to repair itself by releasing growth factors, stimulating the skin cells to generate new tissue, in addition to improve skin tone as well as collagen production. This eventually helps the skin grow back healthily, creating the youthful appearance that comes with generating new, healthier skin in a safe and natural way.
How is it done ?
A small amount of blood is collected from the patient’s arm in a manner similar to that of the blood test.
The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is separated by spinning the patient’s blood through a centrifuge machine. ( 5-10 minutes )
The PRP is activated with calcium chloride to release more growth factors.
A topical anaesthesic cream ( numb cream ) is applied on the patient's face.
After 30 minutes, PRP is re-injected into different areas of the face requiring treatment or rejuvenation with very small needles similar to those used in Botox injections.

This treatment is not recommended in people on anti-coagulation treatment, autoimmune conditions, have suffered any type of cancer or who have certain implants in the treatment area. Your past and present medical history, as well as your past cosmetic history will be assessed by your doctor.
How long is the procedure ?
It usually takes up to 1 hour per session.
Is it painful ?
The procedure where require blood withdrawal might cause slight discomfort upon the needle injection on the arm. Other than that, the pain is minimal as topical anaesthetic cream is applied on the face to reduce discomfort. So, no worries on that !
Is it safe? Is there any side effects ?
The skin might appear slightly sunburnt for up to 48 hours. You might experience minor bruising, redness and swelling due to the injection. They should subside within 2-3 days. Other than that, PRP therapy is safe. As I mentioned above, there is almost no risk of allergic reaction or infection with the treatment because PRP is derived from your own body. However, you should disclose all medications that you are currently taking (including herbs and supplements) to your doctor before starting on the treatment.
What should I do after the PRP therapy ?
Skin hydration and protection are the key. You should keep your skin thoroughly hydrated and always remember to apply a minimum of SPF 30 sunscreen multiple times a day to ensure good protection.
How often should I do a PRP therapy ?
2-3 treatments with 4-6 weeks apart is recommended. Once you and the doctor are happy with the results, you can simply have maintenance treatments every 12-24 months. However, this may vary depending on your skin condition, lifestyle and expectations.
When will I start to see results?
Results are visible usually 2 weeks after the treatment. As the platelets stimulate the release of the growth factors to generate more collagen formation, you will surprisingly notice that your overall skin condition will improve days by days. The best results should be achieved around 4 months after the treatment.
Is the result permanent ?
The results usually last up to 18 months. To achieve longer results, maintenance treatment can be done every 12-24 months. However, the results may vary depending on individuals.
Can I combine PRP therapy with other treatments ?
Yes, you can combine the treatments to obtain even better results. Some patients have combined PRP therapy with microneedling and see satisfying results for acne scar. Some patients who have combined PRP therapy and fractional laser treatments show better results in skin rejuvenation. However, always talk to your doctor regarding your needs and the doctor will advise accordingly.
Why should I do PRP therapy in a clinic ?
Although PRP therapy doesn't involve any filler as PRP is derived from the patient's own body, it still involves needles and blood. Hence, proper infection control is strictly required to induce any infection. The medical equipments in a clinic are always approved and qualified, so no worry on that ! In addition, doctors are trained and skilful in handling needles. With the medical background, they will know what to do when there is complication. They are way more experienced than anyone else outside the clinic. Thus, always think of a registered clinic with a professional team when you had decided to go for this treatment. You will definitely satisfied with the results and can't wait for the next visit !
